Profile

A right-arm medium-pacer, who can chip in with handy runs in the lower order, Deepak Punia started his first-class career with Services in the 2014-15 domestic season, before moving to Saurashtra the following season. Punia was part of the Saurashtra team that finished runners-up in the Ranji Trophy 2015-16. He made a few useful contributions along the way, taking three second-innings wickets to help seal an innings victory over Vidarbha in the quarter-final, and scoring a quickfire 42* to bolster Saurashtra’s first-innings lead in their win over Assam in the semi-final.

In his first two seasons, some of his best performances came in the T20 format. In the 2014-15 edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he took 6 for 14 for Services against Haryana, which was the best innings returns in the tournament at the time. In the 2016 IPL auction, Punia was signed up by Mumbai Indians for his base price of Rs 10 lakh.
